Pico Projection

The convenience of small form-factor devices such as PDAs and camera phones has led to explosive adoption. But at a cost. As screens have gotten smaller, it has become more difficult to share images, video and other types of information with nearby friends and colleagues.

Pico projector technology solves this problem by de-coupling image size from device size. These tiny displays enable large crisp images to be projected from cell phones and other very small hand-held devices.

Two primary factors have slowed the introduction of practical pico projectors: first, the availability of sufficiently bright LEDs, and second, the clarity of images produced by the display panels themselves. But new and more powerful LEDs have recently come on the market, and Displaytech has released its LightView display.

Displaytech’s ferroelectric liquid crystal on silicon (FLCOS) technology enables super-fast light switching at speeds 100 times faster than other liquid crystals, delivering unsurpassed image resolution, extremely low power consumption (less than 100mw), and ease of manufacturability.

A perfect storm of new technology and changing user demands is creating new applications and solutions with the potential to transform front projection as profoundly as the microprocessor changed computing from mainframes to notebooks.

From room-sized film projectors to tiny digital displays that can fit into a pocket — we’ve come a long way, baby!

The coming wave of pico projectors heralds a new era for products like cell phones and digital cameras. Pico projectors will free consumers from the screen altogether. Small, inexpensive, low-power microdisplays can now be integrated into portable consumer gear. Cell phone and digital camera users can project images against a wall or onto a desktop. Road warriors can project business graphics onto a piece of paper.

And the kids? Are you kidding?

The kids are gonna go crazy!
