FLC Applications
Holographic data storage
FLC spatial light modulators are well suited for use as write heads in holographic data storage systems. Displaytech, in collaboration with InPhase Technologies, has developed SLMs with integrated phase masks, solving the DC hot-spot problem of Fourier-plane recording.

Head mounted displays
FLCOS displays with LED color-sequential illumination are an ideal combination for head and helmet mounted displays. Recent work at Displaytech has shown that efficient LED illumination optics enable HMDs with ultra-high brightness imagery (over 100,000 cd/m2).

Digital gray scale
The high-speed switching of FLCOS displays allows gray-scale images to be generated completely digitally. Displaytech has developed a number of innovative digital gray-scale techniques.

Beam steering
Besides displaying images, FLCOS SLMs can steer light beams, and provide adaptive-optics functions like wavefront control and aberration correction.

Optical correlators
Spatial light modulators can be used in powerful image recognition systems called optical correlators. Typically, optical correlators are bigger than at least a bread box. By fabricating two SLMs and an image detector on a single silicon chips, Displaytech researchers were able to make a correlator the size of business card.

Spatial light modulators
Displaytech’s FLCOS development began with spatial light modulators in 1989, when the company made the first LCOS device to utilize standard foundry CMOS.

Waveguide switches
The large refractive index modulation produced by FLC switching can be used with the principle of total internal reflection (TIR) to produce optical waveguide switches for fiber optic and telecommunications applications.
