World's Number One Viewfinder Manufacturer Now Making Microdisplays for Displaytech

Miyota Facility Skyrockets Displaytech's Manufacturing Capacity

LONGMONT, Colo., November 20, 2000 -- Displaytech Inc., the world leader in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) microdisplays, today announced Miyota Company Ltd. is now manufacturing Displaytech microdisplays. Miyota, an established, proven manufacturer of precision-processed electronic components, has become Displaytech's primary manufacturing facility and is executing all phases of microdisplay production.

Located in Nagano, Japan, the Miyota facility boosts Displaytech's manufacturing capacity, while making it the only dual-sourced microdisplay manufacturer in the world. Through this, Displaytech accelerates its volume manufacturing program, enhances its production capacity, and strengthens the quality of its microdisplays by tapping into Miyota's proven experience in high-volume, electronic component manufacturing. The extensive automation in Miyota's manufacturing line ensures consistency and quality throughout each microdisplay produced. Currently, Miyota is working to qualify for ISO 9001 certification.

"Miyota's expertise is expected to satisfy the tough demands of OEMs integrating microdisplays in consumer electronics products," said Haviland Wright, CEO of Displaytech. "Our choice to utilize Miyota's facility was based on the company's unsurpassed reputation of high-volume, quality manufacturing. This helps us meet the expected demand from consumer electronics producers requiring the absolute best display products available."

While many companies retrofit semiconductor machines to produce microdisplays, Miyota's expertise in custom device manufacturing has enabled the company to produce its own microdisplay-specific production machines. For the microdisplay customer this guarantees quality and ensures true high-volume production availability. Because custom designed machines can produce a larger number of better quality displays, the overall cost of each display is significantly reduced. This gives OEMs using Displaytech's microdisplays a distinct advantage over the competition.

Displaytech and Miyota believe that worldwide demand for Displaytech's unique microdisplay products is best satisfied by Miyota's superior manufacturing capability. The company's precision-processing innovation and experience in display manufacturing are a perfect fit with Displaytech's large-scale production plans.

"It is our great honor to have a role in the high-volume manufacturing of Displaytech FLC microdisplays," said Yoritake Ohya, managing director of Miyota. "This is the first step, but a very significant step in solidifying a strong relationship between Displaytech and Miyota. I hope this relationship will be a steppingstone toward worldwide microdisplay adoption." Displaytech's Longmont, Colo., facility will continue to produce microdisplays while focusing primarily on prototyping, pre-production methodology and FLC materials manufacturing.

Displaytech manufactures a variety of microdisplays, all of which are roughly the size of a postage stamp. Current applications for the displays include TVs, viewfinders for camcorders and digital cameras, computer monitors and head-mounted displays. With the advent and increasing worldwide adoption of mobile computing, the applications for these full-color, high-resolution displays become almost limitless.
