Microdisplays

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 5, 2001 -- Displaytech Inc., the leader in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) microdisplays, today announced at SID that it will soon begin production of the model QDM-0076-MV5 QVGA microdisplay, an improved version of its volume-produced LightView QVGA Display Module. The full-color MV5 microdisplay offers an extended storage temperature range of -22 degrees Fahrenheit to 181.4 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 degrees to 83 degrees Celsius), as well as an extended operational range. The display module also offers an adjusTABLE brightness level; a feature long-awaited in the microdisplay industry. These improvements allow OEMs more flexibility than ever when designing new products using microdisplays.

Part of the LightView product line, the LightView QVGA MV5 microdisplay is a superior choice for applications like camcorder and digital still camera viewfinders, wireless communication devices and porTABLE games. The full-color microdisplays resolution of 320 X 240 pixels translates to high-quality, sharp image representation. A miniscule form factor of 0.19" diagonally means the displays are light weight and lend themselves to innovative product designs. Additionally, the microdisplay uses much less power than conventional display alternatives, which means the battery life of mobile electronic devices is greatly extended.

"It is important to note exactly what the extended temperature range for our display means," said Haviland Wright, Displaytech's CEO and chairman. "Being outside when it's -22 degrees can lead to severe frostbite within minutes. Temperatures of 140 degrees will cause serious burns in only three seconds that require surgery. This really puts into perspective what it means for our microdisplay to be able to be stored at these temperatures for long periods of time."

Based on Displaytech's proven, mass-produced QVGA display, the MV5 will be ready for shipping in the second half of 2001.

Displaytech's proprietary FLC material switches faster than common liquid crystals, which translates to smoother, more accurate image reproduction. The MV5's adjusTABLE frame rate supports switching speeds up to 100 full-color frames per second. These switching speeds, combined with the MV5's color sequential operating mode, mean every pixel on the tiny display has the capacity to produce true 24-bit color.
