ORLANDO, Fla., February 13, 2001 -- Displaytech Inc, a leading manufacturer of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) microdisplays, announced today at PMA that COACH (Camera On A CHip) image processing chips from Zoran Corporation (Nasdaq: ZRAN), a leading provider of digital solutions-on-a-chip for applications in the growing multimedia and consumer electronics markets, are programmed to interface with microdisplays made by Displaytech. Zoran's COACH processor and PixelCam CMOS image sensor, when combined with the high image quality of Displaytech's LightView QVGA display modules, provide a complete component set for leading OEMs producing digital imaging devices for cameras, cellular phones, PDAs and personal computers.
"Replacing the traditional CCD sensor and color LCD, the COACH, PixelCam and Displaytech combination offers a high performance, cost effective 1.3 megapixel camera. Our companies joined efforts in integrating the combined solution into a mature product," said Coby Sella, VP and General Manager of the newly formed Personal Media Division at Zoran Corporation.
"Our goal is to offer digital imaging OEMs a wide range of display solutions to compliment different levels of imaging products," said J.P.VALiulis, senior director of business development at Displaytech. "Our displays and their associated chip sets are at home in studio-quality digital cameras, as well as consumer-level pocket cameras. Partnering with a leading image processing company like Zoran means we can offer OEMs rock-solid, state-of-the-art display quality and performance backed by a company with a large, respected client base and strong record of innovation."
The COACH's flexible architecture supports a wide range of camera designs, from low cost, low-resolution cameras to high-performance, professional cameras. The chip supports a capture rate up to 15 frames per second and comes with a complete development kit. Zoran's PixelCam CMOS sensor delivers CCD image quality with 1.3-megapixel resolution at one-quarter the power dissipation and twice the integration level of CCD sensors, increasing battery life and reducing "time to next shot."
Smaller than a postage stamp, Displaytech microdisplays offer a crystal-clear alternative to conventional displays. Their size and light weight translate into smaller and lighter camera designs with outstanding color viewfinders. Microdisplays also use significantly less power than other display options, meaning battery life is measured in months, rather than hours.
