ORLANDO, Fla., February 12, 2001 -- Displaytech Inc., the leader in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) microdisplays, today announced at PMA, in conjunction with its Japanese manufacturing partner Miyota, that the JVC Company of America is incorporating Displaytech's NTSC Monochrome FLC video display modules as viewfinders in its new camcorders.

"This is a giant step for Displaytech," said Haviland Wright, Displaytech's CEO and chairman. "Camcorder viewfinders have been a stepping stone to commercial applications for microdisplays. ThisVALidates Displaytech and Miyota's private label product strategy, which positions both companies for fast growth in the camcorder viewfinder business. We expect our camcorder viewfinder manufacturing capability to provide the foundation for all of Displaytech's high volume microdisplay manufacturing at Miyota."

The NTSC Monochrome FLC video display is a superior choice for applications like camcorder viewfinders due to a number of inherent properties. The display's resolution of 400 X 225 pixels translates to high-quality and sharp image representation. A miniscule form factor of 0.24" diagonally means the displays are light weight and lend themselves to innovative product designs. Additionally, this microdisplay uses much less power than conventional display alternatives, which means the battery life of mobile electronic devices is greatly extended.

JVC's MiniDV camcorder, the GR-DVL310U, will feature Displaytech's NTSC Monochrome FLC video display as a component in its near-eye viewfinder. The camcorder offers consumers a variety of attractive features, including high-quality picture and sound in a MiniDV/stereo format, digital effects, multimedia interfacing, image stabilization and still-image capture modes.

"This is a significant step for Miyota in terms of further development of our viewfinder business," said Yoritake Oya, managing director of Miyota. "Miyota has been a world-leading manufacturer of CRT-based viewfinders. Now we are expanding our viewfinder business with Displaytech's NTSC Monochrome FLC video display."

Located in Nagano, Japan, Miyota is a manufacturer of precision-processed electronic components. The facility boosts Displaytech's manufacturing capacity, while making Displaytech the only dual-sourced microdisplay manufacturer in the world. Through these two sources, Displaytech accelerates its volume manufacturing program, enhances its production capacity, and strengthens the quality of its microdisplays by tapping into Miyota's proven experience in high-volume, electronic component manufacturing. The extensive automation in Miyota's manufacturing line ensures consistency and quality throughout each microdisplay produced.
